- Last Updated on May 17, 2023
Elden Ring boasts a whole host of quests, many of which have their own key items that are required to advance them, and discover the secrets at the end. If you’ve ventured east into Caelid, you’ve probably encountered Gurranq the Bestial Clergyman in his Bestial Sanctum, and heard him hunger for Deathroot. If you want to hear more from Gurranq and advance his questline, you’ll have to venture out in search of this unique plant.
Deathroot is mostly found in dungeons and catacombs, places where Those Who Live In Death dwell. If you want to find all nine, you’ll have quite a bit of spelunking to do, but the rewards are worth it for both mage and warrior alike. To make your search easier, here’s where you can find every Deathroot in Elden Ring.
Finding Deathroot in Limgrave
The first place you should search for Deathroot is your starting region, Limgrave. There’s a total of two in this region; one tucked away in the Deathtouched Catacombs, and the other held by a Tibia Mariner. Killing it will drop the Deathroot.
Deathroot in Deathtouched Catacombs
Deathtouched Catacombs is a dungeon found in the north of Limgrave, close to the wall leading to the Divine Tower of Limgrave. It’s a relatively easy dungeon, with only a handful of skeletons, and a Black Knife Assassin at the end. This miniboss will drop the Assassin’s Crimson Dagger, which is a pretty decent dagger used in a few builds. In the same room as the Assassin, there is a chest containing the first Deathroot. Don’t forget to claim your prize for clearing the dungeon.

The second Deathroot of Limgrave can be found in Summonwater Village, a sunken village on the northeast of the map. To find it, head north to the Deathtouched Catacombs, then east over a bridge. Continue along this path until you reach the village. Inside will be a Tibia Mariner, which you will need to kill to claim your second Deathroot. The fight will be pretty easy, especially if you ride on Torrent, and you won’t need to worry about any additional enemies save for a few Dragonflies. Once the Tibia Mariner is dead and your Deathroot obtained, you can move on to the next area.
Finding Deathroot in Liurnia of the Lakes
With the Deathroot in Limgrave plucked, your next location will be Liurnia. This location also has two Deathroot for you to find. Again one is a reward for clearing a dungeon, and the other a drop from another Tibia Mariner.
Deathroot in Black Knife Catacombs

The first Deathroot of Liurnia can be found in Black Knife Catacombs. This dungeon is located in the northern part of Liurnia, fairly close to the Minor Erdtree. On approach to the Minor Erdtree is a fork in the road. At this fork, take the eastern road leading down the hill. At the end of the hill is the entrance to the Black Knife Catacombs. Once inside, you’ll need to clear the dungeon and kill the Cemetery Shade for your third Deathroot.
Deathroot held by the Tibia Mariner
If you’ve already explored a bit of Liurnia, you might well have already picked up this Deathroot. It can be found along the eastern path, quite close to the Carian Study Hall. You’ll bump into it about halfway along this road. This Tibia Mariner is no different than the one in Limgrave, so you should have an easy time with it. Once you’ve killed it, the Deathroot will be automatically added to your inventory.
Finding Deathroot in Altus Plateau
The next two Deathroot are located in Altus Plateau, a fair trek away from Liurnia. You’ll either have to find the two halves of the Dectus Medallion for the Grand Lift of Dectus or climb the Ruin-Strewn Precipice for access. If you choose the latter, make sure you’re equipped to fight the Magma Wyrm at the top. Once you’re up there, you’ll need to prepare for the same song and dance as before; an expedition into a dungeon and a fight with a Tibia Mariner.
Deathroot in Gelmir Hero’s Grave
This Deathroot is held deep in the grave at Mt. Gelmir. Depending on how you’ve arrived at Altus Plateau, this location might be a pain to reach. If you arrive through the Grand Lift of Dectus or the Ruin-Strewn Precipice, you’ll need to head north through Lux Ruins and Wyndham Ruins, then through Seethewater River. Head left once you reach the Shaded Castle, keep going past the magma pit, then up the hill to the Hermit Village.
There’s a jagged outcrop at the end, which can be used to jump across the gap leading to Gelmir Hero’s Grave. As you can see, it’s quite a journey. If you allow yourself to get killed by the Abductor Virgin’s special attack at the bottom of Raya Lucaria Academy, you will be transported to Volcano Manor. From here, it’s a much shorter trip out the back door and around the mountain. If you haven’t made it into Raya Lucaria Academy, you’ll need a Glintstone Key first.
However you reach Gelmir Hero’s Grave, you’ll need to make your way to the bottom of the dungeon to reach the main boss chamber. Inside is Red Wolf of the Champion, the guardian of your fifth Deathroot. Kill him to claim it.
Deathroot in Wyndham Ruins

If you traveled through here to reach Mt. Gelmir, you probably saw the Tibia Mariner lurking about these ruins. If you didn’t, you can reach it easily by heading north from the Grand Lift of Dectus. Partway up the hill, you’ll be ambushed by Ancient Dragon Lansseax, but you can run right past him without an issue. Once at Wyndham Ruins, kill the Tibia Mariner for your sixth Deathroot.
Finding Deathroot in Mountaintops of the Giants
Mountaintops of the Giants is the final location that holds Deathroot in Elden Ring. It has a total of three, requiring one battle in the overworld, and two forays into a dungeon.
Deathroot near Castle Sol
The outskirts of Castle Sol is the location of the seventh Deathroot in Elden Ring. The castle is in the northern reaches of the area, and can be easily reached by travelling through the mountain pass in the middle of the region. On approach to Castle Sol, you’ll end up on a hill overlooking the castle populated by a bunch of giant skeletons. The Tibia Mariner is tucked away on a small ledge a short distance from these skeletons. Kill it for your Deathroot.
Deathroot in the Hidden Path to the Haligtree
Accessing this secret dungeon will require a bit of exploration on your part. You’ll need to collect the two halves of the Haligtree Secret Medallion. If you don’t already have them, you can find the right half in the Village of the Albinaurics by hitting a pot near the perfumer and speaking to the man inside, and the left half at the top of Castle Sol. Once you have both halves, head to the Grand Lift of Rold and hoist the secret medallion to open the way to the Haligtree.
Once inside the Hidden Path to the Haligtree, you’ll have a maze to navigate. There are invisible paths descending into the dungeon, but one wrong step will send you plummeting into the abyss. Thankfully, there is no shortage of messages and bloodstains to show you where you should step, and where you definitely shouldn’t. Guarding the exit is the Stray Mimic Tear, the boss of this dungeon. Behind it is a chest holding the eighth Deathroot.
Deathroot held by the Ulcerated Tree Spirit
The final Deatroot awaits in the Giants’ Mountaintop Catacombs. This dungeon can be found quickly, starting from the Grand Lift of Rold. Simply head through Zamor Ruins, up the hill pockmarked by white trees, and head right at a fork. In front of you should be an opening in the cliff face. Drop down that opening overlooking the pass, then head right around the corner. The dungeon entrance should be at the end of the ledge.
An Ulcerated Tree Spirit is the boss for this dungeon. The boss chamber has a chest with the ninth and final Deathroot, and you’ll get a Golden Seed out of defeating the boss to boot. With that, your quest for the nine Deathroot is complete.
What can Deathroot be used for?

Deathroot is required for Gurranq the Bestial Clergyman’s questline. To discover his whereabouts, claim the first Deathroot and head back to D in the Roundtable Hold. He will direct you to Gurranq’s Bestial Sanctum in Caelid. Although you can make the journey through Caelid, there is a much easier way to reach the Bestial Sanctum. In the small lake near the Third Church of Marika is a Sending Gate, which will transport you right in front of the Bestial Sanctum.
However you reach the Bestial Sanctum, head inside, and speak to Gurranq. He will ask you to find Deathroot and bring them to him. Each Deathroot you bring him will be rewarded with various items, spells, and other valuables. Once you’ve fed him all nine, Gurranq’s questline will be complete, and he will reward you with an incredibly rare Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone.
