How To Make Caviar In Stardew Valley

Caviar Stardew Valley

Although growing and harvesting crops is a core part of Stardew Valley, there’s a whole lot more money to be made for farmers willing to put in a bit more effort. Working on what your fields and animals produce will result in artisan goods, which can be sold for much more than the sum of its parts.

Making artisan goods will mean more money, but as a tradeoff, it’s going to take a lot more time and effort. You’ll need to craft a few bits of equipment to use when refining your goods, and you’ll need a bit of patience, too. But, once you’ve got your artisanal foundations up and running, you’ll even be able to make the otherwise worthless Roe worth a fair bit on the market. With the right fish, you’ll even be able to make Caviar, something that will make your farm a healthy income on the side. Here’s how you can create your own source of this high-class delicacy.

Crafting Caviar in Stardew Valley

Making your own Caviar in Stardew Valley is a bit difficult. There are a few hoops you’ll need to jump through to set up your Caviar production, but once you’ve done so, it’s very easy to maintain, earning you a good amount of cash with little effort.

First, you’ll need the right fish – not just any old Carp or Bass will do. Instead, you’ll need to catch a fairly rare fish that will challenge your angling skills – the Sturgeon. This fish is a bit difficult to catch, so you might want to set aside a day for fishing. Next, you’ll need to build a Fish Pond on your farm, which will be used to house your Sturgeon and collect their Roe. Lastly, you’ll need to craft a couple of Preserving Bins to age the Roe and produce the Caviar.

Fishing for Sturgeon

Caviar Stardew Valley Sturgeon

This fish can only be caught during the Summer and Winter seasons, though you can purchase one from the Travelling Merchant or Krobus if you’re lucky. It can be caught in the Mountain Lake, with the fish being more likely to be hooked on rainy days. You’ll also need to start your fishing expedition between 6am and 7pm, anywhere outside of this timeframe, and the Sturgeon won’t come out. When casting, the further from shore your bobber lands, the more likely you are to hook a Sturgeon. In ideal conditions, your chance of hooking a Sturgeon is 16% at best, so you’ll probably be fishing for a little while.

If fishing isn’t your area of expertise, you might want to pay a visit to Willy’s fishing shop for some gear. Buying a few pieces of bait will make fish bite quicker, meaning your fishing trip will be a bit more efficient. You can also use a Dressed Spinner to make fish bites even more frequent, or bobbers like the Cork Bobber to make catching the fish a bit easier. Once you’ve got a couple of Sturgeon, you can move on to the next step.

Building a Fish Pond

Fish Pond

With a few Sturgeon in hand, you can get to work on building a place for them to live. For your Sturgeon to produce Roe, you’ll need to keep them in a Fish Pond, which can be placed anywhere on your farm. To build one, you’ll need to collect 200 Stone, 5 Green Algae, and 5 Seaweed. Take these resources up to Robin at her carpentry shop, along with 5,000g, and she’ll build one for you on your farm. After 2 days, your Fish Pond will be complete, allowing you to place your Sturgeon inside. Over time, they will multiply and produce Roe, which you’ll need to make Caviar in the next step.

Aging Roe in a Preserves Jar

With your Fish Pond built and your Sturgeon happy in their new home, all that’s left to do is wait. In time, they will produce Roe, which you’ll need to place in a Preserves Jar to be aged into Caviar. If you haven’t crafted a Preserves Jar yet, you’ll need 50 Wood, 40 Stone, and 8 Coal, and your Farming skill needs to be four to unlock the recipe.

Once you’ve put your Roe into the Preserves Jar, you’ll need to wait 6000 minutes, which is roughly 4 in-game days. After the wait, simply head back to your Preserves Jar and interact with it for your Caviar.

Uses for Caviar in Stardew Valley

The main use for Caviar is to be sold for a decent amount of semi-passive income. Each piece of Caviar will earn you 500g at base, with the price tag increasing to 700g if you have the Artisan skill in the Farming tree. Although selling it is the best use for Caviar, it isn’t the only one.

As Caviar is almost universally liked, with only Jas, Vincent, and Sebastian disliking it, using it as a gift is a decent idea for building up your relationships with the villagers. You’ll also need Caviar for the Missing Bundle, which reveals itself after you’ve completed the Community Center. If you’re a fashionable sort, you can also use Caviar at Emily’s sewing machine to create the Fashion Hat, a fine addition to your wardrobe.
