Forming a posse in Red Dead Redemption 2 is a great experience. Nothing beats saddling up and riding out with your crew, whether it be to wreak havoc or lay down the law. What’s more, Rockstar brought the game to more platforms than its predecessor, meaning you can roam the Wild West on PC and consoles.
That said, the addition of new platforms has brought about a new question – is Red Dead Redemption 2 cross-platform? This question comes as no surprise, since cross-platform functionality is expected by more and more players as time goes on. People want to squad up with their buddies, regardless of what platform is used, and Red Dead Redemption 2 is no different.
In this post, I’ll be covering whether Red Dead Redemption 2 is cross-platform, and exactly what functionality is available on what device.

Is Red Dead Redemption 2 cross-platform overview
As per usual, the answer is kind of. Red Dead Redemption 2’s cross-platform functionality depends on the device, but as a whole, it doesn’t have much. To clear up any confusion, I’ll break down the three features that make a game cross-platform. If you already know the score, feel free to skip ahead.
First up is cross-play. This feature is what most people probably have in mind when thinking about cross-platform functionality. In short, cross-play lets players from completely different platforms connect and play together, whether their device is a PC or Playstation. Funnily enough, although this is the most commonly thought of feature, it is also the rarest.

Next up is cross-progression. This feature is a lot more common than cross-play, being present in quite a few games these days. Essentially, cross-progression allows players to make progress on one platform, then pick up where they left off on another. This usually means an account is involved, with your progress being linked directly to that account. MMO games are a prime example of cross-progression, assuming they can be played on more than one platform.
The last feature is cross-generation. This is also fairly common in recent years, referring to games that can be played on different generations of the same console. For example, a game that can be played on Playstation 4 and Playstation 5 is cross-generation. This is often called backward compatibility. With all that out of the way, let’s see if Red Dead Redemption 2 is cross-platform.

Is Red Dead Redemption 2 cross-platform In 2022?
As I mentioned, Red Dead Redemption 2’s cross-platform functionality depends on the device. It isn’t the most decisive of answers, but that’s the norm when it comes to cross-platform questions.
Is Red Dead Redemption 2 cross-platform on PC?
To kick things off, I’ll start with this resounding no. Red Dead Redemption 2 is not cross-platform on PC at all, regardless of what the other platform is. There is also no cross-progression capability between PC and other devices. Pretty simple, but hardly a satisfying answer.
Is Red Dead Redemption 2 cross-platform on Playstation?
The short answer is somewhat. While better than PC, Red Dead Redemption 2 is still not cross-play compatible with other platforms, nor does it have cross-progression. However, it is cross-generation. This means that you’ll be able to form a posse with your buddies on both PS4 and PS5 consoles.
Is Red Dead Redemption 2 cross-platform on Xbox?
The answer to this question is much the same as for Playstation. Though it isn’t cross-play compatible, Red Dead Redemption 2 can be played across Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S platforms. You won’t be able to connect to any other platforms, though.
Is Red Dead Redemption 2 cross-platform? – summarized
That’s pretty much everything you need to know about Red Dead Redemption 2’s cross-platform compatibility. While the game is cross-generation Playstation and Xbox consoles, that’s pretty much it. Though it’s picking up steam as of late, cross-platform compatibility is a fairly novel feature. Given the increasing demand, hopefully it will become a more widely adopted feature in the future.
