Roguelike games occupy a pretty specific niche, being fairly easy to get to grips with, but remarkably difficult to master. Despite the difficulty, or maybe because of it, the roguelike genre has a sizable following, and plenty of games made by passionate developers.
Risk of Rain 2 is one of these games. Developed by Hopoo Games, Risk of Rain 2 is a roguelike with a whole lot to give, and is accessible to first-time players of the genre. It even has multiplayer, meaning you can die to ever-growing hordes of increasingly difficult enemies with up to three of your buddies. While par for the course with most games today, multiplayer is still a fairly uncommon feature for roguelikes, with most multiplayer-compatible games only having some form of two-player co-op. The lowdown on Risk of Rain 2 cross-platform compatibility
As with pretty much every game at this point, whether Risk of Rain 2 is cross-platform is not clear-cut. Ideally, multiplayer games would boast an unfettered connection between players on any platform, but this is not the case. Cross-platform functionality is the sum of three different features, and games rarely support all three. Before I answer whether Risk of Rain 2 is cross-platform, I’ll first summarize these three features, so feel free to skip ahead if you already know the score.

The first feature is cross-play, the main one people have in mind when thinking about cross-platform compatibility. This feature refers to games that allow players on multiple consoles to connect to the same server. For example, a cross-play game would allow Xbox and Playstation players to connect to the same lobby.
The second feature is cross-generation, often thought of as backward compatibility. This refers to games that can be played on multiple different versions of the same device. For example, several Call of Duty games can be played on previous iterations of Playstation and Xbox consoles, as well as the modern platforms.
The final feature that makes up the cross-platform trinity is cross-progression. This feature refers to games that can be played on one device, saved up, then continued from the same place on a different platform. This feature is predominantly used with MMO games, where your progression is tied to your account, as opposed to a particular device.

Is Risk of Rain 2 cross-platform compatible?
With the groundwork laid, it’s time to answer the main question – is Risk of Rain 2 cross-platform? As the game is out on a multitude of platforms, it’s worth covering each one of them individually, as opposed to giving a broad answer. It isn’t definitive, but that’s how it goes with cross-platform compatibility.

Is Risk of Rain 2 cross-platform on PC?
Yes, at least somewhat. Risk of Rain 2 has fairly recently gained cross-play functionality between Steam accounts and Epic Games accounts. If you and your buddies are split up across these two platforms, you’ll be able to connect quite easily. Cross-play will be off by default, but once you fire up the game and go to multiplayer for the first time, you’ll be met with a prompt that lets you toggle cross-play between Steam and Epic Games. Otherwise, you can just head into settings and toggle the option right at the top of the list. To join a lobby, you can either invite your friends from Epic Games into your game, or join theirs by pasting their lobby ID into the server browser. They’ll need to make sure it’s public, though.
That’s where it ends, though. Risk of Rain 2 doesn’t have any further cross-platform compatibility for PC, so you won’t be able to connect with your friends if they have the game on Playstation or Xbox.
Is Risk of Rain 2 cross-platform on Playstation?
Risk of Rain 2 has little in the way of cross-platform functionality for Playstation. You won’t be able to join any of your friends that have the game on Xbox or PC, but you will be able to join different PS generations. If you’ve got Risk of Rain 2 on PS4 and your buddies have it on PS5, you’ll still be able to connect without any issues.

Risk of Rain 2’s cross-platform functionality works for Xbox the same way as it does for Playstation. This is to say not much, but you will still be able to join your friends even if you have different iterations of the console. You just won’t be able to connect with anyone on Playstation or PC.
Is Risk of Rain 2 cross-platform on Nintendo Switch?
As for the last device, the answer is a firm no. Risk of Rain 2 is not cross-platform between the switch and any other device, nor is there any cross-generation or cross-progression functionality either. Unfortunately, you’ll either have to grab a new console if you want to play the game with your friends, or settle for singleplayer for now.

All in all, Risk of Rain 2’s cross-platform compatibility is fairly limited. Multiplayer is stuck with whatever device you bought the game on, but there is some wiggle room for console generations and storefronts. That said, I suggest waiting a while if you have Risk of Rain 2 marked as a decent multiplayer game for you and your buddies on different devices. The chances of more cross-platform functionality coming in the future aren’t nil, as it wasn’t that long ago that we saw cross-play between Steam and Epic Games added.
